Produced by pedal steel player and instructor Jeff Newman under the Full Moon Records label, this 7″ record features two versions of the classic Buck Owens song “Together Again,” one on each side.
Side one, humorously labeled “Even Better”, runs for 4 minutes and 27 seconds. This rendition of “Together Again” features extended instrumental breaks played by a who’s-who of steel guitar legends: Tom Brumley (who played the original steel part on “Together Again” with Buck Owens), Paul Franklin, Lloyd Green, and Jeff Newman himself. Each player takes a solo section as the track modulates, giving the listener a chance to draw a sonic comparison between each player’s unique voice on the instrument. While Ronnie Robinson delivers an excellent vocal performance, it’s the outstanding steel guitar work that truly shines.
Side two, labeled “Pretty Good”, is shorter at 2 minutes and 46 seconds, presenting a slightly different arrangement. The same steel guitar players are featured, this time in a new order, further showcasing each player’s versatility.
Jeff Newman’s vision as a producer really comes through, paying tribute to a classic song while elevating it with performances from some of the best steel players in history.
